If PowerPoint won't save, the first priority is protecting your current work before troubleshooting further — then figure out whether it's a permissions issue, a sync conflict, or file corruption.
1. Save a copy immediately
Before doing anything else, use File > Save a Copy and save to your local desktop with a new file name. This sidesteps whatever's blocking the original save and protects your work while you troubleshoot.
2. Check if the file is open elsewhere
If the file lives on OneDrive or a shared network drive, someone else having it open — or you having it open in two windows yourself — can block saving. Close other instances and try again.
3. Check OneDrive or SharePoint sync status
If the file is saving to OneDrive, click the OneDrive icon in your system tray and check for sync errors. A stuck or paused sync can make PowerPoint appear to hang on save when it's actually waiting on the cloud upload. See our OneDrive sync troubleshooting guide if sync itself looks broken.
Tip: if you get an error mentioning the file path being too long, this is a real Windows limitation, not a PowerPoint bug — try saving with a shorter file name or to a folder closer to your drive's root.
4. Check available disk space
PowerPoint files with embedded video or many high-resolution images can be large. If your drive is nearly full, saves can fail silently or with a vague error. Check available space and clear some if it's low.
5. Try saving in a different format
If saving as .pptx fails, try Save As and choose an older format like .ppt, then reopen and re-save as .pptx. This sometimes works around a corrupted save state tied to the specific file.
6. Check for a read-only lock
If the title bar shows "[Read-Only]" next to the file name, that's why saving is blocked. Right-click the file in File Explorer, go to Properties, and uncheck Read-only if it's set.
The bottom line
Save a copy first to protect your work, then check whether it's a sync, permissions, or space issue. Most "won't save" problems aren't file corruption — they're something blocking the save process externally.
