OneDrive share links can fail for several distinct reasons, and the exact message you see is usually a real clue rather than a generic error — worth reading carefully before troubleshooting.

"You need access" or "Request access"

This means the link was shared with specific people only (not "anyone with the link"), and your account isn't on that list. Click Request access if available — this sends a notification to the file owner, who can then grant you access directly. If no request option appears, reach out to the sender directly and ask them to either add your specific email or change the link to "Anyone with the link."

"This item might not exist or is no longer available"

This usually means one of:

In any of these cases, you'll need a new link from the sender, sent fresh from wherever the file currently lives.

"Sign in to continue" when you're already signed into the wrong account

If you have multiple Microsoft accounts (personal and work, for example) and you're signed into the wrong one in your browser, OneDrive may not recognize you as the intended recipient even though you do have access via a different account:

  1. Try opening the link in a private/incognito browser window, which won't carry over your existing sign-in session
  2. Sign in with the specific account the file was actually shared with

If you're trying to access a work/organizational link from outside the organization

Many organizations restrict OneDrive/SharePoint sharing to "people in my organization" by default, even when a link is sent externally. If you're an external recipient and getting blocked, this is a deliberate organizational security setting — the sender will need to specifically change the share permission to include external users, or use a "Specific people" link that explicitly includes your email address.

If the link works but the file won't open or download

This is usually unrelated to access permissions — more likely a file format your browser or device doesn't support directly. Try the Download option (rather than trying to preview in-browser) and open the file with the appropriate application on your device instead.
